Cyanobacteria are an ancient type of marine bacteria that, like other phytoplankton, capture and store solar energy through photosynthesis. Some are toxic to humans and animals. Moreover, large blooms can cause an oxygen-depleted dead zone where other organisms cannot survive.
On August 11, 2015, NASA's Landsat 8 satellite captured this natural-color view of what appears to be a large bloom of cyanobacteria swirling in the Baltic Sea. Blooms like this flourish in the Baltic Sea during summertime, when there is ample sunlight and high levels of nutrients. Tracks of several ships show up as dark lines where they have cut through the bloom in this image offered by Customaps. One of these ships is especially apparent in the upper right hand corner, just below the clouds. Cruise ships, for example, are often in the area, and they have been reported to play a role in contributing excess nutrients, through the dumping of sewage, that lead to the large, dense blooms. Agricultural and industrial run-off from European countries bordering the Baltic Sea (Sweden, Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania etc.) also contributes excess nutrients.

- PEEL & STICK WALL MURALS:
Our wall murals are made of a self-adhesive thin polyester fabric material. They have the look and feel of a very thin canvas and do not require use of wallpaper paste or any extra glue for hanging. Our map murals can easily be removed, leaving no trace or sticky residue on 99% of any surface! They can be moved and re-applied over and over again, as the adhesive does not weaken or strengthen over time. Stick your map for a day – or stick it for a decade – still removes with no issues. Our material is green, nontoxic and safe. We protect them with a transparent laminate, which allows you to clean your map with a damp sponge.
Note: it is recommended to apply your wall mural on LOW or NO VOC paints.
