Ile de la Réunion

Print Description

This amazingly detailed image taken on July 23, 2015 from NASA's Landsat 8 satellite and offered by Customaps, shows “l’île de la Réunion” - an insular region of France located in the Indian Ocean that has a fascinating Creole, African, Indian, Chinese and French heritage, with a wealth of architectural treasures and vibrant festivals. It is situated east of Madagascar and about 190 miles (175 kilometers) southwest of Mauritius, the nearest island.

The island has been inhabited since the 17th century, when people from Europe (mostly France), Madagascar and Africa settled there. Slavery was abolished on 20 December 1848 (a date celebrated yearly on the island), after which indentured workers were brought from South India, among other places. The island became an overseas department of France in 1946. The diversity of landscapes is truly astonishing for such a small pocket. Jutting out of the ocean like a basaltic shield cloaked in green, this scenically magical island is a mini-Hawaii.
