This high-resolution satellite image, offered by Customaps, shows the resort city of Rancho Mirage in Riverside County, California – an area where the desert meets twelve golf courses. Located 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage is one of the nine cities of the Coachella Valley. Although its first modern settlements date back to the 1920s and 30s, the city got its claim to fame after World War II.
The Annenberg Estate or Sunnylands, owned by philanthropists Walter and Leonore Annenberg, had become popular amongst the wealthy and powerful. Visitors included Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Queen Elizabeth II, Patrick Macnee and Mary Martin. Several US presidents have also been known to vacation there, including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford. Ford later bought a house in Rancho Mirage and lived there until he passed away in 2006.
